Our Portfolio Manager, Sam LaBell, appeared on BNN Bloomberg to discuss the day’s market news, including federal initiatives to boost Canadian productivity and investment, such as privatizing airports and increasing LNG exports.
For instance, he thinks the proposal to privatize operations at Canada’s four largest airports could unlock value from those assets.
“[An] airport is long-term, it’s stable, it produces good value, so it has a higher value as an income-generating asset outside of a public ownership structure. But we do have to protect the consumer.”
Sam explained that LNG Canada, a joint venture aimed at increasing export capacity, has gained momentum with the federal government’s Productivity Mega Deduction, which allows businesses to write off all capital expenditures in the first year.
Sam also mentioned Q2-F26 results for Reitmans Canada Limited (TSXV: RET.A), describing it as “a survivor of a very tough retail environment in Canada.”
Finally, Sam identified U.S./Canada trade and the upcoming U.S. midterm election as the big stories to watch, while adding that resolving the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz is the biggest economic risk going forward because of elevated oil prices.
“We think there is some incentive before the midterms to try to resolve the trade disputes with Canada. Two of the biggest irritants for the Republicans are cost-of-living issues, which are obviously aggravated by tariffs, and the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz with Iran. So there is some pressure to announce something positive and change the narrative before what looks like is going to be a very tough midterm for the Republicans.”
